Bhutan Telecom to launch 4G LTE in Thimphu on 24 October 2013

Bhutan Telecom Ltd, the oldest and one of the largest internet and telecommunication service providers in Bhutan has announced that it will launch the latest mobile internet technology, 4G LTE on 24th October, 2013 in Thimphu.

On its official website, it stated that it will initially be available for selected locations in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

These are the places or location in Thimphu where subscribers will be able to avail 4G LTE network:

  1. Norzin Lam
  2. Chubachu
  3. Offices near dzong
  4. Kawajangsa
  5. Changangkha
  6. Ministers’ Enclave
  7. Other places around Motithang High School

According to their announcement, 4G LTE network will operate at 1800 MHz frequency.

Their announcement says, “smartphones that do not support Thimphu’s 3G network frequency of 850 MHz will not be able to fall back from 4G to 3G in places where 4G is unavailable”.

The cost of 4G usage will be on PAY PER USE scheme @ Nu. 0.001 per kb and the SIM card for 4G costing around Nu. 500 with Nu. 500 worth data and validity of 7 days will be available for sale, according to their announcement.

They sated that “4G LTE is 4 times faster than 3G and 10 times faster than home broadband. You can watch latest videos, TV series, play online games, upload videos and many more with 4G LTE Service”.

Many subcsribers are sceptical of the latest service’s quality and functionality as many clients say the current 3G network is not up to their expectation. 3G network constantly faces network errors.

One of the subscribers said: “If it is not even a whole of Thimphu, why should they announce of the service launch?. If they think it is worth to announce its launch, they should have prepared 4G LTE coverage atleast all areas in Thimphu.”

“They should have at least improved the 3G before the quantum leap to 4G! As for the sporadic reach, this has traditionally always been the case with BT (Bhutan Telecom)”, commented one user on a Facebook post by one of the subscribers of Bhutan Telecom.

Bhutan Telecom first announced that it will launch 4G LTE in Thimphu on April 4, 2013 during a World Mobile Congress in Barcelona.

What has happened to Google Street View project in Bhutan?

Google announced and launched its flagship street photo mapping project in Bhutan in March 2013. It was inaugurated by Ministry of Information and Communications on March 15, 2013. Many expressed grateful to Google for considering Bhutan in their project. We were indeed excited to see Bhutan’s landscape and cultural heritage sites featured online for mass audience around the world.

Until now, we haven’t heard any updates on the project. The program, when launched, said it would start from Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan.

I didn’t see the Google Street Car here in Thimphu even once plying or taking pictures.

We hope to see this project progress well and see some updates by Google as well.

Bhutan Telecom to introduce 4G LTE in Thimphu

4 April, 2013 – Bhutan Telecom Ltd., one of the oldest ISPs and Telecommunications service providers in Bhutan announced today that to use its new 4G (Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, clients need new SIM cards for their devices or USB data cards. In its first official announcement on 4G LTE services, it mentioned that the first 4G LTE station will be deployed in Chubachhu (their office premises) and above Motithang Higher Secondary School in Thimphu. These stations will be the first two for 4G LTE in Bhutan where users within 0.5 – 1km will be able access the service.

With introduction of 4G LTE, it said the users will be able to enjoy faster internet speed which has got 40-50Mbps data capability in Thimphu. But the largest drawback of the new service would be that the older equipments will not be compatible with their 4G LTE.

Bhutan Telecom, in their announcement said, “This service provided by Bhutan Telecom can support only data service which will be availed both through mobile handset and data cards with 1800 MHz (band-3), GSM 900/1800 and UMTS 850/2100 MHz frequency bands.”

“As the existing 3G SIM and data cards will not support the LTE service, customers will require new SIM and
LTE data card to avail the service which will be made available by BT for sale at counters, once ready.”, they said.

In 2012, Bhutan Telecom and Ericsson announced during Mobile Word Congress in Barcelona, Spain that they will introduce 4G LTE in Bhutan.

As Bhutan Telecom is currently deploying 3G services in various towns in Bhutan, the clients based outside Thimphu, Phuntsholing, Paro or Wangdue Phodrang may have to wait much more longer to experience 4G LTE, the latest mobile internet technology and successor of 3G technology.
